Milan to Lake Como in One Day: the Perfect Itinerary
It’s Europe’s most underrated day trip: forty minutes by train separate Milan’s Duomo from a lake with the most photographed villas in the world. You don’t need to sleep at the lake, you don’t need a car, you don’t need to plan weeks ahead. You just need the right order of moves — here it is, hour by hour.

The morning: train and Brunate
From Milano Centrale the direct train reaches Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes (€5.20, first run 6:43, then roughly hourly); from Cadorna you reach Como Nord Lago in an hour, already on the lakefront. Once in the square, the Brunate funicular leaves every 15–30 minutes: a seven-minute climb and the lake opens up beneath you — an aperitivo for the eyes.
Which train to actually take
Want the lake immediately and zero climbs? Cadorna → Como Nord Lago. Staying near Centrale, or want the flat 40 minutes? Centrale → San Giovanni, then a fifteen-minute downhill walk. On summer weekends leave by 9am — later trains fill up.
Midday: the lake from the water — the part you’ll remember
Lake Como is at its best seen from the lake: the villas — Balbianello of the movies, George Clooney’s Villa Oleandra — were built facing the water, and from land you see their backs. The afternoon: lunch and slow steps
After the tour, lunch on the lakefront or in the old-town alleys — from pizza to lake fish you’ll spend €15–30.
